Doxa Sub 200 – WhitePearl

by Chamath Gamage

The Doxa Sub 200 was released in Baselworld 2019 as one of the more affordable luxury pieces that pack quite a punch. A simple three-hand divers watch that is not only stylish but also very versatile. Doxa is known to have colourful and playful dials, and with the Doxa sub 200, this is no different. The brand initially released this model with dial colours ranging from orange, black teal to yellow, although these weren’t the official names of the “colours”.

Just last month, Doxa released the latest colour for the Sub 200 collection. Dubbed as “whitepearl”, the latest piece is a different take from the other pieces in the collection, with this watch being presented in all white. Normally all-white watches can feel quite tacky, however, this hits a little different, appearing more on the luxury yet playful side.

Design:

The Sub 200 is presented in a 42mm case size, with an inwards sloping bezel insert. In the previous colour variations, the bezel insert was black, even if the dials were a different colour. This time, however, Doxa has decided to colour match the bezel insert to the dial by donning it in white as well. This certainly makes the white more prominent. Large baton style markers are used for the hour indexes, with them also being filled with white superluminova to provide dial readability in low-light conditions (deep diving!).

What this does to marker appearance however is that only the outside of the markers are visible, making them seem hollow and blend into the background. This is matched with the hour and minute hands. The hands are done in black, which provides the perfect contrast against an all-white appearance and make readability much easier, quite important for a divers watch.

A date window is also present at the 3 o’clock position, with the design for the window being the same as the hour indexes. This model is offered in two different strap options, with the standard being the stainless steel “rice bead” bracelet. This option gives it a luxury and classy finish, making it a great dress piece with a touch of playfulness. The second option is the white rubber strap, which makes this piece really stand out. With the stainless steel option, the white can blend in with the bracelet, however with the rubber strap option, what you get is a complete white piece.

Movement:

The movement used inside the Doxa Sub 200 White Pearl is the same as the ones in the other Sub 200 collection; the ETA 2824-2 mechanical calibre. The ETA 2824-2 movement beats at a frequency of 4Hz (28, 800 vibrations per hour) and puts out a power reserve of approximately 42 hours. The watch is also rated to a water resistance depth of 200m (20 bar).

While this all-white may not be everyone’s taste, the Doxa Sub 200 Whitepearl shakes things up in what is already a colourful Sub 200 collection. Paired with the stainless steel bracelet, this timepiece can work very well as a diver’s watch, a luxury piece, and a sporty one all at the same time. Not bad for the money you pay for it!

Australian Retail Pricing: $1,550.00 ( Rubber Strap), $1,590.00 ( “Separate Beads of Rice” Bracelet)
