The 2023 Fifa Women’s World Cup is the 9th edition so far, and with each tournament passing becoming an ever more popular event around the world. With this prestigious sport comes the many stand-out stars from each team. As they stand out on the pitch with their performances, outside of the pitch they show their taste in fashion and their taste in luxury timepieces. In this article, we present some of the female international stars that represent the sporting world of football and the watches they’ve been spotted with!

Sam Kerr

Seen as one of the best forwards in Woman’s football history, Sam Kerr is a proud Australian football star. The captain of the Australian National Woman’s team, the Matildas, and current club player for Chelsea Football Club, she holds quite a few records for herself. Records such as all-time leading goal scorer for W-league and Matildas along with National Woman’s Soccer League Golden Boot just to name a few.

IWC recently (June 29th, 2023) was proud to announce Sam Kerr as the newest Friend of the Brand. Kerr states in regards to this partnership “I am excited to represent IWC because it is a company that celebrates those who follow their dreams,” states Kerr. “Throughout my career, I have always stayed true to myself which is something IWC and I have in common. Whether it is through sports or engineering watches, we strive for excellence by doing things our own way.”

With this partnership, Sam Kerr has been spotted wearing quite a few IWC watches, in particular their chronograph models. One of her go-to timepieces has been the IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 Rose Gold Green Dial (Ref. IW388110). The timepiece features the brand’s in-house Calibre 69385 movement giving out a power reserve of approximately 46 hours.

This Day-Date 40 model is made from 18 ct yellow gold with a champagne-color dial, fluted bezel, and the iconic President bracelet. Leah’s choice of watch brand also appears to be Rolex, as she has been seen wearing a Rolex Datejust 36mm two-tone. This model comes with a steel case and a two-tone jubilee bracelet. Matching the gold of the bracelet is a beautiful champagne dial, followed by the iconic large Cyclops date window at 3 o’clock.

7 High-End Purple Dial Timepieces https://www.watchadvice.com.au/17716/7-high-end-purple-dial-timepieces/ https://www.watchadvice.com.au/17716/7-high-end-purple-dial-timepieces/#respond Fri, 28 Jul 2023 11:02:24 +0000 https://www.watchadvice.com.au/?p=17716 Earlier this month we wrote a piece on how coloured dials are becoming more popular, but the beauty of the purple dial is often overlooked. This previous article covered 5 purple dial watches under $5,000 (which you can read here). In this article, we aim to showcase the more expensive timepieces, with what the high-end luxury watch brands have to offer when it comes to purple dial timepieces.

Regardless of the price bracket, purple dial timepieces are certainly not easy to come by. Many brands either opt to stay away from colour or only reserve it for special limited edition runs. Either way you look at it, it seems like a real shame that brands aren’t bringing more of this stunning colour into their collections.

Who knows, maybe purple dials may come back as a trend in the near future, much like the Tiffany blue or “iced blue” dial trends, albeit these two already fall into the category of the more popular coloured dials. Maybe what we need is a high-profile watchmaker to release a purple dial timepiece in a non-limited run to set things off. Until then, however, we present to you seven high-end purple dial timepieces that are available on the market. Keep in mind, some of these models may be limited editions, so if your heart desires one it may be best to look into the second-hand market.

Zenith – DEFY 21 Ultraviolet

Ref. (97.9001.9004/80.R922)

Featuring Zenith’s high-frequency El Primero 21 1/100th of a second chronograph movement, this 44mm matte titanium watch features a beautiful violet skeleton dial. Even though it’s the main plate of the movement that’s purple, it can be still easily be seen by the viewer. To match the dial is a violet and black rubber strap.
This is easily one of our favourite purple dial timepieces. With the skeleton dial, and matte titanium case, it all blends together nicely. And more importantly, looks spectacular on the wrist with that 1/100th of a-second chronograph function!

Australian Recommended Retail Price: $21,100.00

Rolex – Datejust 36mm

Ref. (126234)

This white gold and oystersteel Datejust 36mm comes with an aubergine diamond set dial. The dial features Roman numerals for the hour indices, with the Roman VI and IX set with 24 diamonds. The aubergine dial has a sunray finish, done through brushing techniques that creates grooves that move outwards from the centre of the dial.
The aubergine dial will play with light beautifully thanks to this sunray finish. With the rest of the timepiece finished in either white gold or oystersteel, it allows the aubergine dial to really stand out. The Datejust is finished with its iconic fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet.
Australian Recommended Retail Price: $16,950.00

Hublot – Spirit of Big Bang Tourbillon Purple Sapphire

Ref. (645.JM.0120.RT)

This list wouldn’t be complete without a sapphire timepiece from Hublot. The Tourbillon Purple Sapphire Big Bang is one up there for being one of Hublot’s most daring timepieces, and it’s available in purple!

The timepiece’s polished purple sapphire crystal stands out as one of the best-looking purple timepieces in this list, complimented nicely by its transparent purple structured lined rubber strap. The Spirit of Big Bang Tourbillon Purple Sapphire is limited to a run of 50 models.

Australian Recommended Retail Price: $309,000.00

Audemars Piguet – Royal Oak Frosted Gold Selfwinding Chronograph

Ref. (26331BC.GG.1224BC.01)

A purple dial timepiece in Audemars Piguet’s lineup is no common sight, however, the model they currently have is a stunner to say the least. Featuring a plum purple sunray finish dial with Audemars Piguet’s iconic “Grande Tapisserie” pattern, the purple stands out beautifully especially with the white gold hour indices and counters.

If this wasn’t enough, the whole timepiece (case & bracelet) is done in 18k white gold with a “hammered” finish, to give the watch a frosted look. Overall just an amazing-looking timepiece. The model is limited to a run of 200 watches.

Did your heart beat faster too just looking at it?

Australian Recommended Retail Price: By Appointment Only

H. Moser & Cie – Endeavour Centre Seconds Concept

Ref. (1343-0212)

If you’re after a purple dial timepiece, just to showcase the purple dial and nothing else, who does it better than H. Moser & Cie? The brand’s Endeavour Centre Seconds Concept is one of their purest collections, showcasing nothing but just the beauty of the dial and the hour, minute and second hands.

And what a beautiful dial it is. This limited edition (20 models) features a Purple Haze fumé dial that one can get lost in quite easily. Pictures don’t do this dial justice. The watch comes in a 40.8mm solid 18-carat white gold case with the brand’s hand-wound HMC 343 calibre movement, that gives out a staggering power reserve of 7 days!

International Recommended Retail Price: CHF 24,000

MB&F – LM101

Ref. (LM101 WG Purple)

In 2021, MB&F released three new editions for their iconic LM101 timepiece. One of these models was the striking purple dial matched with 18k white gold case. The watch itself is a feat of watchmaking engineering, but accompanied by this purple dial it becomes something else entirely.

While, yes, the blue dial LM101 is one beautiful watch, especially that hue of blue, but the purple is just as if not more mesmerising. Like the H.Moser&Cie’s fume dial, you can catch yourself (and quite possibly everyone around you) staring at the beauty that lays on the surface of this watch. The definition of mechanical “Art for your Wrist”.

International Recommended Retail Price: 73‘000 CHF

Czapek – Faubourg De Cracovie Purple Panda

Even though this timepiece is sold out (can be pre-ordered for the next possible run), we thought it should still get a mention due thanks to its artistic purple dial. The Czapek Faubourg De Cracovie comes with a handcrafted Guilloché “Résonance” bombé dial in purple and white, which gives the dial a beautiful artistic look.

The Guilloché “Résonance” bombé pattern also revolves around the 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock sub-dials, instead of it being a uniform pattern on the dial. The timepiece is offered in a 41.5mm stainless steel case with the brand’s caliber SXH3 movement sitting inside.
International Recommended Retail Price: 32‘000 CHF

Hublot’s Celebrates The Big Bang’s 18th Birthday with A Limited Edition Unico Full Magic Gold https://www.watchadvice.com.au/16803/hublots-celebrates-the-big-bangs-18th-birthday-with-a-limited-edition-unico-full-magic-gold/ https://www.watchadvice.com.au/16803/hublots-celebrates-the-big-bangs-18th-birthday-with-a-limited-edition-unico-full-magic-gold/#respond Thu, 22 Jun 2023 07:42:05 +0000 https://www.watchadvice.com.au/?p=16803 Hublot is celebrating the 18th Birthday of the Big Bang this year, and to help the festivities has lunched an all new Big Bang Unico in full Magic Gold – Hublot’s wonderous gold allow impervious to scratches! Limited to just 200 pieces, it’s sure to be a hit with collectors and Hublot fans alike.

Say what you want about Hublot, they’ve certainly made their mark on the international watch scene over the past 40 years. A brand not afraid to innovate, they’ve had some major ‘firsts’ for the industry and today still come up with some insane pieces of engineering you can wear on your wrists. Just look at the Big Bang Tourbillon in neon yellow SAXEM they released at the start of the year. If you missed it, have a read of it here and think about the engineering that’s gone into that piece!

Hublot’s new Big Bang Unico Full Magic Gold – Happy 18th Birthday Big Bang!

So for the Big Bang’s 18th Birthday, it’s not surprising that Hublot would bring out a statement piece like the Big Bang Unico in full Magic Gold. For those not familiar with Magic Gold, it’s the first 18k Gold alloy in the world to withstand scratches, entirely developed by Hublot. To give an idea of its hardness, traditional gold has a rating of 400 Vickers. Hardened steel, 600 Vickers. Magic Gold, 1000 Vickers!

Hublot achieve this by injecting liquid gold into cold-pressed boron carbide components at very high pressure, the equivalent of 2000m of pressure under the ocean. Doing so, Hublot has managed to create a completely unique material, composed of gold and ceramic, that can only be scratched by diamond. Let that sink in – a gold that does not scratch. Who else does this?

Magic Gold in macro mode – almost a satin polish to it!

The all new Big Bang Unico is in full Magic Gold, so you get major wrist presence with the 44mm Chronograph and amplifying this is the gold on the numeral, hands and indices on the skeletonised dial – all housed under the scratch resistant sapphire crystal.

The skeletonised dial showcasing the Unico 2 movement.

The Magic Gold is both satin polished and sandblasted to give the case and bezel different textures, which is generally needed when you have a mono-chromatic watch like this. In true Hublot style, they’ve paired the Magic Gold case with a black rubber strap, black titanium pushers and crown to give the watch an overall imposing aesthetic.

Black and Gold works and creates a unique aesthetic!

Inside beats the heart of the new Big Bang Unico Full Magic Gold – the HUB1280 Unico 2 movement. A self-winding flyback chronograph, entirely developed in house by Hublot. With a 72 hour power reserve and beating at 28,800 vph (4Hz) it’s a solid movement. The Unico 2 has one of the smoothest chronograph pushers I’ve experienced in a long while. It’s almost effortless to operate the stop/start function, which in my opinion is what you need for timing so there’s no delay. Hublot achieve this by employing a column wheel and a new vertical clutch system, ensuring there is no jump at the start and alleviates any wear and tear on the movement itself.

Final Thoughts

Hublot is a brand that you either love or hate. But without haters, you can’t have lovers, and for this reason Hublot is successful. The one thing you can’t deny is they innovate and break the rules set by the watch industry. They try new things, experiment with new materials and in some cases, do many years in research and development prior to using new methods and alloys. The new Big Bang Unico is a combination of all these factors rolled into one watch.

At 44mm in diameter and 14.5mm thick, the Big Bang Unico’s are not for the faint of heart, or slight of wrist, but if you can pull it off, and afford it, you will certainly have a talking piece at the next watch get together! The new Hublot Big Bang Unico Full Magic Gold is water resistant to 100m and comes with a 2 year warranty, 3 years if registered online. This really needs to be 5 years these days, and with a price tag of $54,200, you would expect it to last at least this long!

The Hublot Big Bang Unico Full Magic Gold – innovation and boldness in one statement piece.

Hublot Unveils A Limited-Edition Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic Exclusive To The New York City Boutique https://www.watchadvice.com.au/16500/hublot-unveils-a-limited-edition-veuve-clicquot-polo-classic-exclusive-to-the-new-york-city-boutique/ https://www.watchadvice.com.au/16500/hublot-unveils-a-limited-edition-veuve-clicquot-polo-classic-exclusive-to-the-new-york-city-boutique/#respond Tue, 13 Jun 2023 08:52:26 +0000 https://www.watchadvice.com.au/?p=16500 The Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic has once again made a return to the Liberty State Park in the New York metro area, and to celebrate this special occasion, Hublot has teamed up with the famed Champagne House to create a very special and unique timepiece, limited to just five models.

This is the 5th time that Veuve Clicquot and Hublot have teamed up to create a special timepiece. Now, the two brands have collaborated once again to create a timepiece exclusive to the New York City boutique, to honor the polo match that took place on June 3rd. For this polo match, Hublot once again acted as the main scoreboard sponsor and also the official timekeeper.

The Spirit of Big Bang Tourbillon 5-Day Power Reserve Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic was unveiled during the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic match. This timepiece is based on the Spirit of Big Bang Tourbillon, which allows Hublot to have the creative outlet to be not only daring with this watch but also artistic in a minimalistic sense. The Spirit of Big Bang Tourbillon comes in a 42mm case shaped to fit the wrist comfortably while also giving a larger presence on the wrist compared to the traditional circular dial.

The Spirit of Big Bang Tourbillon made for the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic is a sure definition of art in the minimalistic sense. First off the case is matte black frosted carbon, while the case back is a Special-edition micro-blasted matte black carbon with sapphire crystal. The timepiece is presented in two strap options, either a black alligator with orange stitching or an full orange alligator strap. The black strap goes perfectly well with the overall appearance of the watch, with the orange stitching matching the orange details found on the dial.

Speaking of the dial, this limited edition timepiece comes with skeletonised dial showing the tourbillon at 6 o’clock, off-center dial at 3 o’clock, and the power reserve indicator at 8 o’clock. While the timepiece does have a very monochrome colour appearance, orange has been used sparingly on the hour indices and hands, and also on the 1 and 2 indications and hand on the power reserve indicator.

The movement powering this impressive timepiece is Hublot’s HUB6020 Power Reserve Skeleton Tourbillon Movement. Operating at a frequency of 3 Hz (21, 600 VpH), the movement can give out a staggering power reserve of 115 hours (or 5 days), all the while operating from a very minimal 183 components.

President of Hublot America, Natacha Lamour, was excited with this latest creation and collaboration with Veuve Clicquot as she states “We are thrilled to announce our fifth limited-edition timepiece in collaboration with Veuve Clicquot as well our partnership with the prestigious polo tournament for its exciting return to New York. Veuve Clicquot defines its brand by being ‘modern and audacious,’ while living up to their motto of being the finest quality – a philosophy that continues to resonate with us at Hublot. What a monumental way to kick off summer and celebrate the fusion of watchmaking, sport, and fashion.”

The Spirit of Big Bang Tourbillon 5-Day Power Reserve Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic was created as the perfect combination of horology, sport and fashion, all the while celebrating the special partnership between Hublot and Veuve Clicquot. The timepiece will be limited to a production of only 5 units, which can only be purchased exclusively from the Hublot Boutique in New York.

Love Nespresso? This Latest Release From Hublot May Be The Perfect Watch For You https://www.watchadvice.com.au/15740/love-nespresso-this-latest-release-from-hublot-may-be-the-perfect-watch-for-you/ https://www.watchadvice.com.au/15740/love-nespresso-this-latest-release-from-hublot-may-be-the-perfect-watch-for-you/#respond Mon, 15 May 2023 08:49:58 +0000 https://www.watchadvice.com.au/?p=15740 Innovation and sustainability have come together to create a watch no one would’ve thought to be possible. For the first time, Hublot and Nespresso have come together to create the first watch made from recycled Nespresso coffee grounds and capsules.

This certainly is one cool watch, not just because of the material used to create it, but also for the beautiful shade of green that’s been produced. The Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin brings forth innovation, excellence, and sustainability, core values that are shared by both brands. Besides the movement, almost every part of this watch has been redesigned with coffee grounds and capsules.

The recycled coffee grounds from the capsules are made into two watch straps. The first is a rubber version, while the second is a velcro fabric version. The velcro fabric version was made with Hublot collaborating with SingTex, which is one of Nespresso’s partners that are already using recycled coffee grounds to produce a fabric called Scafé.

How Hublot has managed to form coffee grounds into watch straps is anyone’s guess. Approximately 4.1 percent coffee grounds and 8.2 percent recycled white rubber is used to make the rubber strap. The fabric strap however is made from 5 percent coffee grounds and 95 percent recycled polyester.

The Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin comes with a 42mm case, which like the straps is anything but ordinary. The case, bezel, crown, and pushers are all made from recycled aluminum. For this case, approximately 28% of the aluminium composite is made from Nespresso coffee capsules. This material composite is then put through an anodizing process which gives the stunning Hublot/Nespresso green colour. The case is then satin finished and polished to add a nice shine to an already impressive case.

Hublot has their calibre HUB1280 movement which is the openwork automatic chronograph movement. With a constant seconds counter at 9 o’clock, and a 60-minute counter (with integrated date window) at 3 o’clock, the movement is able to put out a power reserve of 72 hours. The case back is open as you would expect, and it shows a pretty image of the architecture of this movement.

While the green is continued into the elements of the dial, a generous amount of Superlumi-Nova is used for the hour indices and hands. This also aids in the readability of the dial thanks to the slight contrast of white against the green. A neat little detail and a reference to Nespresso is the brand’s “N” logo on the crown.

This watch was made to grab attention. And once it’s there, what a story it tells. Imagine hearing that this watch is made from coffee ground beans. It’s a surefire way to get a “you’re joking” type reaction! The colour green is also the perfect choice, as this watch is all about being sustainable and as environmentally friendly as possible.

The Hublot Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin is an online exclusive model only and is limited to 200 models worldwide.

If You Had $100k To Spend On Just One Watch, What Would It Be? https://www.watchadvice.com.au/15593/if-you-had-100k-to-spend-on-just-one-watch-what-would-it-be/ https://www.watchadvice.com.au/15593/if-you-had-100k-to-spend-on-just-one-watch-what-would-it-be/#respond Sun, 14 May 2023 10:14:14 +0000 https://www.watchadvice.com.au/?p=15593 Imagine this: You’ve just come into a lot of money, maybe you won the lotto, or a long lost rich Uncle left his entire fortune to you, or maybe you’ve just sold your tech business to Google. Congrats! You’ve set aside $100,000 to buy your dream watch, but this is now the age old dilemma, what on earth do you get?

I think Taylor Swift said it well in her song Blank Space, when she sung “I’m a nightmare dressed like a daydream”, which is exactly what this scenario is for many of us. A daydream that could be a nightmare for us indecisive watch lovers! This question came up when talking to one of my colleagues a few weeks ago; what would you buy with $100k? The honest answer is, I have no idea, as the options and possibilities are endless!

The Piaget Altiplano Ultimate – not quite a $100k, but a good start!

Is the $100k a watch at retail, or on the grey market? Does it have to be new, or second hand? And when splurging that type of cash on just ONE watch, do you go for a daily wearer, or one that you pull out at special occasions to show off? Now you can see the whole nightmare part of this daydream scenario. Again, thanks TayTay.

Watch Advice is about giving advice, so naturally, for anyone out there that’s blessed to have this first world problem, we have a five great choices for you. And for those just playing along at home and daydreaming about such a scenario, then dream about some of the below pieces gracing your wrist. Maybe one day one of them will!

Just note, all the prices are at retail, as we’re assuming that you can buy at retail new from a store, not the grey market or second hand, and with you’re new found wealth, why not – it is an imaginary scenario after all!

Breguet Classique Hora Mundi 5727

Maybe not a daily wearer, unless you sit in an office all day as a CEO that is. Nonetheless, Breguet are known for their beautiful watch making, and with $100k at your disposal, this is right on the mark! The 18k Gold Hora Mundi 5727 combines instant time-zone jump with synchronised date, 24-hour and city indications, perfect for those wanting to travel and do it in style!
Australian Recommended Retail Price: $100,000

Piaget Polo Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin

Piaget is massively underrated in my opinion, and if you’re wanting something different with serious horological chops, then the Piaget Polo Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin is a fantastic statement piece that says “I don’t follow the crowd”. The green dial is stunning, and Piaget pioneered the Ultra Thin movement over 50 years ago, which you can read here. It’s a 42mm case, only 8.65mm thick, and to cram all those complications into a movement that’s only 4mm thick is a work of art and science!

AP Royal Oak Pink Gold Chronograph 38mm

No daydream scenario would be complete without at least entertaining an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. In this instance, the pink gold 38mm Chronograph will do the trick! And as these wear large, it will feel like you’ve a 40-41mm on the wrist, and the pink gold combined with the blue Grande Tapisserie dial is perfect and says you’ve made it! It’s a tad over the limit, but hey, only a couple of grand!

Marco Lang Zweigesicht Variation III In Platinum

Marco Lang may not be a name you’ve heard of, but the German watchmaker is doing some incredible work, like the Zweigesicht Variation III in Platinum. With only 18 watches available, you’ll be sure to stand out. This model has a white-fired skeletonized dial in solid silver, covered with blue, translucent enamel “grand feu” and Cathedral hands in blued steel. If that wasn’t enough, the shapes and materials of the hands, hand engravings in the movement and on the case, even different cuts and polishes can be customised for you.
Price based on dial and customisation chosen, circa $100,000

Hublot Big Bang Unico Sapphire

Hublot gets a bad wrap, but to be honest, they do things with materials most other brands wouldn’t think of, and the R&D that goes into some of their pieces is quite amazing. And if you’re not afraid to show off a little, then the Big Bang Unico Sapphire 42 is the perfect statement piece, after all, you’ve got the cash, so why not flaunt it a little. With an all sapphire case, skeletonised dial and the HUB1280 Unico in house movement with flyback chronograph, you’re actually getting a decent watch under all that showiness.

Hublot Brings Back The Big Bang Unico Sky Blue Just In Time For A Vacation To Warmer Shores https://www.watchadvice.com.au/15507/hublot-brings-back-the-big-bang-unico-sky-blue-just-in-time-for-a-vacation-to-warmer-shores/ https://www.watchadvice.com.au/15507/hublot-brings-back-the-big-bang-unico-sky-blue-just-in-time-for-a-vacation-to-warmer-shores/#respond Sun, 07 May 2023 02:14:32 +0000 https://www.watchadvice.com.au/?p=15507 Hublot’s latest release is bringing back the Big Bang Unico Sky blue, just in time for the European Summer! The Big Bang Unico is one of the more iconic timepieces in Hublot’s collection, and now it’s available again in the stunning new sky blue colour. Again you asked? Hublot released this particular model in a 45mm version back in 2020. The cosmetic design of the 2020 model was exactly the same as this new timepiece, with the main changes being that the case size is now reduced to 42mm, and with this change, a different movement is also used.

The colour blue is one of the most popular colours in the world, with the colour representing new horizons, a sense of adventure and exploration. The colour baby blue or sky blue is instantly symbolic of summer times, representing water at the beach or pool and of course clear skies on a hot summer day.

This version of the Big Bang Unico comes in a ceramic case with the collection’s now standard 42mm case size. Ceramic is a material Hublot can call themselves an expert in. In 2019, Hublot had a world first in the watchmaking industry by creating (now patented) brightly coloured ceramic cases. Ever since the creation of the first colours in ceramic, Hublot has essentially every Pantone colour at its disposal. Now, the Big Bang Unico Sky Blue is back with a bang, and it’s here to create some waves.

We honestly love this colour. The sky blue perfectly accentuates the features of the timepiece without providing a direct contrast through darker colours. The watch was made for summer. Combining the iconic colours of blue and white to give that playful summer feel. This model also comes with a choice of two different straps. Firstly a light blue and white lined rubber strap to match the colours of the case or a white calfskin leather with velcro faster and light blue ceramic buckle. Either strap choice is perfectly suited for the occasion the watch is designed for; outdoors.

Ricardo Guadalupe, CEO of Hublot shares the same sentiment as he states “Summer is a festive affair at Hublot! Sea, air, exercise, freedom, fun and time with family and friends. Small, simple pleasures inspired by the sight of a clear blue sky, yet enough to fill us with renewed dynamism. You’ll need plenty of energy to prepare for, make the most of, and savour the memories of the coming summer. The Big Bang Unico Sky Blue can give you the boost you need! “Hublot loves Summer”.

The HUB1280 manufacture calibre movement can be seen from the open-worked dial. This self-winding chronograph movement with a power reserve of 72 hours can also be admired from the timepiece’s open case back. To allow for excellent readability even with the open-worked dial, Hublot has given generous amounts of SuperLumi-Nova for the hour indices and hands, which also appear to be suspended on the dial. The white SuperLumi-Nova also adds to the fun summer colour palette of the watch.

This timepiece, however, is a limited edition model that’s capped at just 200 pieces. While this may be unfortunate news, whoever has the chance to grab one of these watches before they are sold out will be a lucky owner! The timepiece isn’t ideal for formal attire, however, it is versatile for pretty much everything else. And the sky blue colour? Be warned this piece will stand out. In a good way.

The Third Version Of Hublot’s Spirit of Big Bang Sang Bleu Gets A Daring New Look https://www.watchadvice.com.au/15383/the-third-version-of-hublots-spirit-of-big-bang-sang-bleu-gets-a-daring-new-look/ https://www.watchadvice.com.au/15383/the-third-version-of-hublots-spirit-of-big-bang-sang-bleu-gets-a-daring-new-look/#respond Tue, 02 May 2023 08:57:40 +0000 https://www.watchadvice.com.au/?p=15383 The Partnership between Hublot and Maxime Plescia-Buchi, the well-known Swiss tattoo artist, graphic designer, and creative director has been ongoing for the past 7 years. Just like Buchi’s creation of a new identity through tattoo’s that give new shapes and new perspectives, this celebrated artist has also been injecting new spirit into Hublot’s Spirit of Big Bang collection. So far, Hublot and Maxime Plescia-Buchi have created two Sang Bleu timepieces (not including this latest release). The first of these artistic creations was the Big Bang Sang Bleu I, released in 2016. This three-dimensional geometric timepiece revealed a perfectly proportioned structure on the dial, inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man.

In 2019, the second iteration between the renowned artist and the Swiss watchmaker was released; the Big Bang Sang Bleu II. While the first collaboration saw the timepiece dial being the centerpiece of the three-dimensional artwork, this second variation incorporated the watch case, bezel, dial, and bracelet as part of Maxime Plescia-Buchi’s work. This full-body treatment is what is being carried into this year’s latest release, the Spirit of Big Bang Sang Bleu III.

Launched in 2014, the Spirit of Big Bang retained all of the Big Bang’s original features in a barrel-shaped case. A reinterpretation of Hublot’s DNA, simultaneously identical yet so different. For this third collaboration, Maxime has infused it with a new spirit without changing its soul, introducing the Spirit of Big Bang Sang Bleu. He achieves this same transformation, injecting the concepts of the Big Bang Sang Bleu I & II, by redefining the lines of the Spirit of Big Bang. A fusion that exceeds perfection. (HUBLOT CEO – Ricardo Guadalupe)

This latest creation by Maxime Plescia-Buchi stays true to the overall characteristics that he has applied in his previous work with the Big Bang models. Although, now he has decided to really take it up a notch with this new enhanced three-dimensional and ergonomically-enhanced design. A total of three limited edition models are being presented for the Big Bang Sang Bleu III model. Firstly a titanium model in 200 units, an All Black ceramic timepiece in 200 units, and lastly a King Gold timepiece in 100 units. Two models in titanium and King Gold are also being presented with 180 diamonds weighing approximately 2.4 carats.

The 42mm diameter case comes with ultra-generous proportions and a very distinctive shape that catches the eye’s attention. Even though the case shape looks large, it has been designed for an ergonomic fit across all wrist sizes, regardless of male or female. This is thanks to the back of the case being arched at several points. This latest model takes the case geometry from the Big Bang Sang Bleu II, while the barrel shape has been redesigned.

The three-dimensional geometry on the dial is in perfect balance and symmetry with the architecture of the case. The dial’s depth is visualised through polished, satin-finished, engraved, chiseled, beveled, and faceted materials, while the hexagons, diamonds, and triangular shapes overlap to give the iconic architecture of the Sang Bleu models.

Hublot’s engine behind this artistic masterpiece is the HUB4700 automatic movement. This self-winding skeleton chronograph movement operates at a frequency of 5Hz (36, 000 Vph) and gives out a power reserve of 50 hours. As this is a skeleton dial, a lot of the movement can be seen from the front. The case back is also open, however, the beautiful trigonometric design covers a lot of the visuals of the movement.

What Is A Moonphase Complication, And How Does It Work? https://www.watchadvice.com.au/15070/what-is-a-moonphase-complication-and-how-does-it-work/ https://www.watchadvice.com.au/15070/what-is-a-moonphase-complication-and-how-does-it-work/#respond Sun, 23 Apr 2023 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.watchadvice.com.au/?p=15070 The Moon plays a vital role in everyday life, even if we don’t know it. The two biggest things the 4.53 billion-year-old rock dictates on Earth are the tide and time. The different phases of the moon have outlined what we termed as months, including the number of days in a month for a Lunar Calendar.

The Lunar Calendar for example is specifically a calendar that is based on the cycles of the moon. It’s estimated that the average time between two full moons is 29.5 days, therefore the months on the Lunar Calendar were made to be either 29 or 30 days.

A moon phase complication is one of the world’s oldest watch complications. The complication dates back to Ancient Greek times, where the earliest moon phase complication was found on the Antikythera Mechanism. This mechanism was developed by the Ancient Greeks to predict astronomical events, and it would show moon phases and eclipses.

In the modern world, when a moon phase complication is mentioned, one immediately thinks of wristwatches. The first moon phase complication on a wristwatch was developed by Patek Phillipe in 1925, which was shortly followed by Rolex with their own interpretation of the moon phase with Reference 8171 in 1949. In the 21st century, the moon phase complication can be found on timepieces ranging from entry-level to high-level luxury pieces. Most brands follow the same design of displaying the moon phase on the dial, however, a few brands have dared to step outside the norm and create incredible pieces that show this complication in a new light.

How does the moon phase complication work?

The most common way a moon phase is designed on a timepiece is by having two moons on a disc that rotates, shown through a half-circle aperture on the dial. This aperture would only show the correct phase of the moon depending on its current position on the Lunar cycle.

As mentioned earlier, the Lunar Cycle is approximately 29.5 days per month. To be accurate for a watch-making complication, however, the Lunar Cycle is taken as 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes, and 2.8 seconds. The hour wheel on the gear train plays a vital role in the operation of the moon phase. As the hour wheel makes one full rotation around the dial every 12 hours (on standard 12-hour timepieces), the hour wheel drives the moon wheel at a ratio of 1:2 (24hrs/2).

The standard moon disc will come with a one-tooth gear that is mounted co-axially. Hidden underneath the dial, the moon disc has 59 peripheral teeth, which results in the advancement of the moon disc once per day. The reason there are 59 teeth is because of the Lunar cycle. 59 divided by 2 is 29.5, which means one moon phase will end after 29.5 days. Having two moons on the moon disc means that when the cycle for the first one is finished, the disc automatically will display the Lunar cycle for the second disc, thereby having a continuous rotational moon phase.

A Moon phase can be displayed in many different ways on the dial. The most common is the half-circle aperture on the dial where the moon phase, the starry night sky along with clouds are shown. Below is a list of some of the different variations of moon phases shown on watch dials.

Blancpain Villeret Quatieme Complet Blue Dial

(Image ref: Watche-news.com/villeret-quatieme-complet-blue-dial)
This stunning display of horology combines red gold with a deep sky blue to make one aesthetic-looking watch. Everything about this timepiece was made to be as beautiful as possible, to complement the host of complications sitting underneath.

The Villeret Quatieme Complet Blue Dial comes with a standard moon phase aperture at 6 o’clock, where a graphic display of the moon and two stars are shown. The half aperture is designed to show the clouds covering the night sky and moon. Along the top half of the aperture, Blancpain has also shown the Lunar cycle of 29.5 days.

Breguet Classique Quantieme Perpetual 7327

Another beautiful display of functions on a dial is the updated Breguet Classique Quantieme Perpetual 7327. The successor to reference 5327 from Breguet, this dial is more refined, less cluttered, and also has an updated moon phase indicator.
The previous moon phase design for this Classique Quantieme Perpetual looked very similar to the Blancpain moon phase indicator above. For this latest reference, Breguet has chosen to go with an accurate depiction of the moon and starry night sky, combined with the aperture’s cloud design. Once again the Lunar Calendar cycle days can be found on the top of the aperture.

If you want to read more about the Breguet Classique Quantieme Perpetual 7327 and see more close-up pictures of that beautiful moon phase, click here!

Hublot Spirit of Big Bang Moonphase Titanium Hands

This monochromatic timepiece is uplifted by the colourful moon phase display at 6 o’clock. The timepiece is full skeleton, where everything is stripped down to a bare minimum to show the movement and workings underneath.
The moon phase indicator follows suit. Although not fully skeletonised, the timepiece comes with a transparent aperture. This shows how the previously mentioned moon phase disc is operated, with two moons being displayed on the singular disc so that after one Lunar cycle ends the other begins in a continuous motion.
Want to see more of this skeletal masterpiece and a closer look at how the moon phase disc looks? Click here!

Christopher Ward C1 Moonglow

The C1 Moonglow by Christopher Ward gives a unique take on the moon phase indicator. The brand’s in-house moon phase movement tracks the moon’s orbit accurately for 128 years! There are two-three dimensional moons on the dial, coated with a generous amount of Grade X1 GL Super-LumiNova, which gives that incredible “moonglow” you see in the picture.
Rotating like a normal moon disc, now covering the whole dial, the phase of the moon can be read from an aperture at 12 o’clock, while the second moon remains “clouded” under smoked glass.

HERMÈS Arceau L’heure De La Lune

One of the most epic displays of a moon phase indicator we’ve seen is HERMÈS’s Arceau L’heure De La Lune. This is a dreamlike timepiece made for lovers of astronomy.
This very unique timepiece shows what Earth’s satellites see’s. It simultaneously displays the moon phases of both the northern and southern hemispheres. The phases of the moon are indicated by, you guessed it, the rotating sub-dials of the hour and date.
This awe-inspiring display of rocks, moon phases, and rotating subdials can be seen more in-depth in our article here!

Arnold & Son Luna Magna Gold

The Arnold & Son Luna Magna Gold is a stunning display of a moon phase indicator. The timepiece focuses solely on the moon phase indicator, with even the main dial being offset to show more of the moon phase and the surrounding starry night sky.
This is the first-ever 3D moon phase indicator shown on a watch at this scale. Made of marble and aventurine, the moon showcases its different phases with astronomical precision. On the case back of the timepiece, is Arnold & Son’s incredible aesthetic design of the movement. At the center of the case back, the brand has placed a rotating sphere that accurately represents the appearance of the quarters of the moon against a starry backdrop.

Recap of Watches and Wonders 2023 https://www.watchadvice.com.au/14498/recap-of-watches-and-wonders-2023/ https://www.watchadvice.com.au/14498/recap-of-watches-and-wonders-2023/#respond Fri, 07 Apr 2023 11:01:57 +0000 https://www.watchadvice.com.au/?p=14498 With Watches and Wonders 2023 officially over, we can now look back and see some of the creations that came out in the world of Horology. There were some amazing timepieces that came out this year, from innovative to new designs and new looks, this year’s Watches and Wonders had it all. Saying this, it’s almost impossible to pick out all the watches that stood out and put them into an article, as there are so many great pieces (we would be reading a while!).

So instead, we present my favourite twelve picks that came out of this year’s Geneva show, from Rolex’s Daytona to Vacheron Constantin’s Retrograde update.

Ulysse Nardin Freak One

The latest update to one of the most daring timepieces created in the 21st century. This newest creation, the Freak One, comes packed with technology while still remaining durable, easy to use, and designed to be worn as a daily.
The timepiece has been given a black DLC-coated titanium case with a rose gold 5N bezel with a matching dial interior. The three signature characteristics that made the Freak an icon is retained on this timepiece: no hands, no dial, and no crown. Ulysse Nardin is aiming to make the Freak One its flagship timepiece. You can read more about this latest FREAK creation here!

TAG Heuer Carrera Date 36mm

While TAG Heuer updated quite a few of their collections, one that stood out beautifully was the new colourways for the new Carrera Date 36mm.
The vibrant pink dial is just made to stand out. The added snailed finish on the dial makes it a stunning timepiece. TAG Heuer made a bold choice to break away from the traditional colours of black, blue, or white. A choice that we think will pay off for the brand. To see more of this pink dial Carrera Date plus more, click here!

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona

No list would be complete without seeing the latest update from Rolex. The Rolex Daytona is as emblematic as it gets in the world of watches. The entire range of Daytona’s got an update for this year’s Watches and Wonders.
While the update to a lot of the models in this collection seemed minor, especially aesthetically, what stood out was the 950 platinum edition. Rolex has, for the first time in a Daytona, given the timepiece an open case back. Only visible on the 950 platinum model, Rolex has given this new Daytona collection the new-generation calibre 4131 movement. Read more about this latest update to the Daytona here!

Hublot Square Bang Unico New Editions

2022 saw the release of a world-first, square-shaped Bang Unico from Hublot. This model has enjoyed a lot of success since its release, so why not bring it back with an impressive update?
This year Watches and Wonders saw Hublot unveil three new editions for their Square Bang Unico. Two models in white and black sapphire and an incredible Square Bang Unico in Sapphire. Hublot is one of the leaders of using sapphire materials in their timepiece, so it only makes sense to bring two impressive designs together. Read all about the new Square Bang Unico here!

Vacheron Constantin Overseas Retrograde

Vacheron Constantin, this year has been all about the retrograde update, with some existing collections getting this feature. One of these collections is the Overseas line.
What is already a stunning timepiece with that gorgeous blue dial, this all-new Overseas model gets the retrograde function. The retrograde display is a historical design for Vacheron Constantin, one that fits beautifully on this timepiece as is also accompanied by a moon phase indicator. Read more about this retrograde update for Vacheron’s Overseas model here!

Montblanc 1858 Geosphere 0 Oxygen The 8000 Limited Edition

I’ve always been a fan of Montblanc’s Geosphere timepiece. The fact that you get the northern and southern hemispheres on the dial spinning in sync with the day/24hr time was always interesting to see.
Now, Montblanc has given the 1858 Geosphere a new update. Montblanc introduced a new capsule collection that pays tribute to the world’s 14 highest peaks. These mountains are all above 8000 feet and have barely any oxygen, which is the central theme in this new collection. Read more about this latest 1858 Geosphere creation from Montblanc here!

IWC Schaffhausen’s Ingenieur Automatic 40

IWC has given their Ingenieur collection a newly engineered update, which references design codes from Gerald Genta’s Ingenieur SL (ref. 1832) from the 1970s.
The new collection comes with four models, with three models being made from stainless steel and the fourth given the titanium treatment. It takes an old classic and gives it modern design features while also improving wearability and performance. All the right ingredients to make it hit in the world of watchmaking. Read more about IWC’s newest Ingenieur Automatic 40 collection here!

Cartier Skeleton Collection

While this isn’t a singular watch, the entire Cartier Skeleton collection makes it into this list. For this year’s skeleton models update, Cartier is upgrading four new collections, each with their own iconic shape and design.
The Santos-Dumont, Pasha de Cartier, Santos de Cartier, and a grand complications pocket watch are getting aesthetic and mechanical upgrades. With a flawless balance between the movement and dial, Cartier has mastered the art of making skeleton watches, more so evident through this latest collection of skeleton timepieces. Read more about this collection here!

Zenith DEFY Skyline Skeleton In Black Ceramic

Following on from 2022’s update for the DEFY Skyline models with the new generation of seminal El Primero high-frequency calibre movements, 2023 sees the watches get a new aesthetic upgrade.
Two models in the DEFY Skyline line get a black ceramic makeover, with one of the models being the Skeleton. Crafted entirely in black ceramic, including the bracelet, the DEFY Skyline Skeleton is one of the standout pieces in Zeniths 2023 releases. To read more about this timepiece, click here.

Oris Aquis Date Calibre 400 41.5mm Bi-colour

This year, Oris has updated the Aquis collection with new colours and materials. With the combination of the coloured rubber straps, the Oris Aquis Date Calibre Bi-colour for is one of the stand-outs in the collection.
This fun summer timepiece is offered in two dial colour variations (deep blue and forest green) and has an 18-carat fold finish on the edges of the bezel and matching gold details on the dial. Oh, and did we mention that it features Oris’s incredible 5-day power reserve Calibre 400 movement? If this piques your interest, click here to read more!

TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph

This one for all the racing enthusiasts out there. The iconic and ageless design of the original 1963 Heuer Carrera has inspired this latest creation from the Swiss giant. With a fresh new dynamic styling, the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph will be released with two dial variants: a black and blue dial.
The dial carries a lot of colour accents, with them being the gradient orange ring, a reference to racecar speedometers. Each variant of this new Carrera Chronograph has its own character; however, what’s clear is that both timepieces carry the Carrera icon into the next generation with ageless styling and high-quality movements. To find out more about this Carrera Chronograph update, click here.

Baume & Mercier Riviera 39mm Collection

Another collection of timepieces that stood out was Baume & Mercier’s 39mm Riviera line. Released as part of the celebrations of Riviera’s 50th anniversary, this new collection is offered with different material and dial variations.
Available in either stainless steel with a smoked blue dial or smoked grey sapphire dial or titanium bezel with a smoked grey dial, this new Riviera collection features a beautiful wave transfer decoration on the dial. This latest update for the Riviera collection brings it forward to a new era while keeping all the essence of what makes this piece loved by watch aficionados.
